Classification Guide Class 18 in Japan

We are about to launch a new brand using leather processed with our new technology.
First of all, we are planning to make “bags” and “wallets” and so on, but how should we classify them for trademark application?

Then you’d have to designate class 18, which includes leather goods, bags, and wallets!
Class 18 includes many goods related to leather and bags, you know. Let’s check it out.

Oh, wait a minute! You should be aware that not all leather goods are included in class 18.

Class 18 is a classification for leather goods, bags, pet clothing, etc.

Class 18 mainly includes leather goods (including imitation leather), bags, and umbrellas.

It may be easier to understand if you associate it with goods that are generally used to hold or carry around personal belongings.

List of main goods in Class 18

The main goods included in Class 18 are listed below.

Well…even if it is made of leather, the classification changes depending on the use.

Bag and cases for a specific product

• bags adapted for laptops [class09]
• cases especially made for photographic apparatus and instruments [class09]
• cases for musical instruments [class15]
• golf bags, with or without wheels [class28]
• bags especially designed for skis; bags especially designed for surfboards [class28]

Oh, bags and cases with a specific use, such as “laptop cases,” are not in class 18!

Other goods NOT included in Class 18

• clothing of leather; leather shoes; leather headwear [class25]
