Even if your trademark is approved for registration, it will not become a trademark right until the registration fee is paid.

What is the registration fee?

The registration fee is a fee paid to the JPO to generate trademark rights if the JPO examination shows no problems and registration is granted.

Even if the registration is approved after the examination by the JPO, if the registration fee is not paid by the due date, the application will be rejected and no trademark right will be created.

The registration fee must be paid within 30 days after the registration is granted, so if you are late in noticing that you have received a notice, your trademark will be rejected.

How much is the registration fee?

The registration fee is 28,200 yen per class.
Therefore, for example, if you file a trademark application for two classes and it is registered, you will need to pay the registration fee of 56,400 yen.

In order to avoid going over budget when it comes time to pay the registration fee, it is necessary to know in advance not only the filing fee but also the registration fee.

Note that if you no longer need to obtain trademark rights, you may choose not to pay the registration fee, but in this case, the fees involved in the application will not be refunded.

Since the term of the trademark right is 10 years, the above amount is for 10 years, but it is also possible to pay the fee in half for 5 years (payment in installments).

Note, however, that the installment payment is more expensive than the lump-sum payment because it is paid in two installments of 16,400 yen per class (32,800 yen in total).

Method of payment of registration fee

There are several ways to pay the registration fee, but in most cases, a “Trademark Registration Fee Payment Form” must be prepared and submitted to the JPO.

A registration certificate will be issued upon payment of the registration fee

If you submit the registration fee payment form by mail, it takes about 3 weeks for the JPO to digitize the payment form.

After that, if there are no deficiencies, the registration will be granted within 3 days and the registration certificate will be shipped approximately 2 weeks after the registration date.
